FG has spoken again about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for children, he talked about the rate of death as an estimated amount of 20,000 women die yearly due to poor breastfeeding.
Dr Osagie Ehanire, Minister of Health, on Tuesday stated in Abuja during a press briefing to observe the 2020 Breastfeeding Week with the theme, ‘Support Breastfeeding for a healthier planet.’
The event was organised by Civil Society-Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria, Alive and Thrive, UNICEF, Nutrition International, Breakthrough Action, Action Against Hunger, HKI and Save the Children.
Ehanire said the benefit of breastfeeding to both mother and baby included giving babies stronger immunity, as well as reducing risk of suffering many childhood illnesses and infections.
He said, “It is also associated with longer-term health benefits including reduced risk of overweight and obesity in childhood and adolescence.”
